The top two complaints by Internet users about business web sites?
1. "The page loads too slow."
2. "I can't seem to find what I want."

With all the advancements made in technology, some people on the Internet still use text-only browsers, such as Lynx. Why? The answer is speed. Of those that don't surf text-only, many surf with images turned off some or all of the time. Speed of download ranks second only to legibility in concerns that a commercial web site should address.

As more and more people arrive on the Internet, the increase in technology to speed things up is offset by the increase in users. Even on an eight-lane highway, things will slow down if you have enough traffic. Animated GIFs, JavaScript, frames, and all those other things designed to attract the reader's attention are becoming more and more annoying. Although I use browsers capable of displaying all those things, I surf with the extras turned off. The longer it takes a page to load, the more often I will go somewhere else. I am constantly amazed by the number of corporate web sites that use images with file sizes two, three, or even five times larger than they need to be.

Time is money. As more users become accustomed to the web, they become less patient. If your page takes more than 10 seconds to load, you are losing customers. A business site should present the information the reader wants in an attractive way, but as quickly as possible. Business sites should inform and persuade, not entertain. Overuse of large images, animations, Java and other "enhancements" are sure signs of a first-time author, and are likely to send serious customers elsewhere. A business web site should also be designed to be viewed using all browsers. It may look better with images turned on in Netscape or Internet Explorer, but those who access a site text-only or are too impatient to load images should still be able to navigate the site and view the contents. A good way to lose potential customers is to tell them they cannot access the content of your site with their browser the way they have it configured. Even Lynx users spend money.
